Owahda/Wahta
Traditionally, we have two ceremonies at this time of year to honour all of the trees and forests, and give thanks for their assistance to us. The first ceremony called is usually done before the sap rises in the trees, in late February or early March. In it we honour the trees and forests by having a tobacco burning ceremony. We pray that the trees continue in their duty given by the Creator, and also that no harm will come to the people who will be out in the sugar bush, tapping maple trees, and collecting maple sap. We then play the Bowl game, and have several dances, by which the people entertain the trees and forests, in order to honour, and strengthen them in their duties. The Second ceremony is usually done after sugaring season is finished. At this time the Great Feather Dance is sung twice. In between the two dances, a drink made of maple sap is passed amongst the people, who individually say a few words of thanksgiving to show their gratitude to the creator for the gift of the trees. Once they have done this they then drink the sap.
